What is Digital Infrared Medical Imaging (DIMI)?
DIMI is a high-resolution, non-invasive clinical imaging procedure that measures the infrared spectrum of radiation (heat) emitted by the body. Doctors at Johns Hopkins University mapped the normal thermal patterns of the human body. Prolonged deviations from these normal patterns indicate risk and probability that disease will manifest.

How does DIMI show problems years before standard imaging methods?
DIMI is a functional test demonstrating unique insight into the nervous and hormonal systems. Anatomical imaging tests require a solid mass (anatomy) to absorb the x-ray beam. Soft masses don't show up on an x-ray until they are large and/or mature.

What do I do with the information I receive in the report?
Your report is personalized to you and the primary concerns you list on your Health Assessment Questionnaire prior to your appointment. The remarks made on that questionnaire combined with your scans, personal and family health history are all considered by our interpreting doctor. Suggestions are made ranging from lifestyle changes, nutritional recommendations to seeking additional testing or medical intervention. You can contact our office if you have any questions and speak to the doctor for clarification.

How does DIMI "see" tumors forming?
Medical literature reports that tumors give off a "growth factor" as they mature. This chemical stimulates new blood vessels to form and feed the tumor, a process known as angiogenesis. The new blood vessels carry heat to the skin surface and, over time their growth is tracked. The earlier you can see this, the more treatment options you have. The entire story is chronicled in Dr. Folkman's War and available on PBS as The Cancer Warrior

What is angiogenesis?
That’s a big word meaning new blood vessel formation. Cancer research advances are calling scientific attention to angiogenesis as the crucial marker for new cancer formation. The sooner angiogenesis is detected, the better chance of monitoring it and deciding how best to proceed. To see the Nova special featuring Dr. Judah Folkman click on the link below. Does DIMI penetrate into my body?
No. It “sees” radiation coming off your body. We all give off infrared radiation. For example, when you are wearing heavy clothing, that heat is trapped near your skin’s heat receptors, and you notice you are hot. The DIMI camera measures the microcirculation in the outermost ¼ inch of the skin. Nerves connected to organs attach to the spinal cord and indirectly control heat output, giving an indirect impression of their function. The DIMI scan is of no possible risk to you.

Do all the major organs have their own thermal or heat pattern?
Yes. Connected by the autonomic nervous system, each organ has a link to the skin and may reveal abnormal activity by alteration in the microcirculation in the skin. This process has historical roots dating back several thousand years; now, we can see the changes vividly before symptoms indicate a problem.

Something this powerful must cost thousands of dollars?
In addition to being the most risk-free diagnostic test, DIMI is the best "information for the dollar" found in health care today. The Full Body Scan is just $299, including the doctor’s report. To be eligible for a $50 discount off of your scan, please print this page and submit it to the office when you arrive. $50 discount may not be used in conjunction with other special offers we may have in place at the time you present it.

What does the Full Body Scan show?
It shows where your body is functioning well and where it may be at risk. It reveals circulatory problems that won't show on x-rays without a dangerous contrast medium. It shows vascular changes, supporting complaints of pain. You might say it "sees" pain. The Full Body Scan includes the head, neck, back, thighs, legs, and feet. For females, four additional views are taken of the breast. You will receive a detailed report from the interpreting doctor.

What do I do with the information gathered?
You will want to discuss the report with someone knowledgeable in the infrared imaging field. A doctor certified in Digital Infrared Medical Imaging is on staff to help you decide if further treatment or advice is required.

What clinical fields use this?
So far, neurology, sports medicine, oncology, chiropractic, physiotherapy, breast health, orthopedics, pediatrics, and dentistry use thermal imaging.

Does DIMI ever give false positives?
To prevent false positives, the information gathered on DIMI is corroborated with the signs, symptoms and health history you provide us. One place it commonly confuses other medical personnel is with tumor formation. Consider how medical bias's are formed to protect the eight billion annual mammography industry. When DIMI detected a suspicious pattern on a patient’s breast and no growth was determined by the mammogram, the infrared findings were considered “false positives”. However, published medical studies following women who showed abnormalities on DIMI over five years determined that nearly 40% had developed breast cancer. DIMI was accurate years before tumors could be detected by mammography. See the Industry Research overview for more details.

What is the attitude in medical oncology for this procedure and breast disease?
Honestly, most physicians have very little knowledge about this topic. Most use traditional, older tools to study breast disease. However, in 1998, cancer researchers at Ville Marie Breast and Oncology, in Montreal, Quebec, published an article in The Breast Journal related to DIMI. In the closing remarks, the authors wrote, "Our initial reappraisal would also suggest that infrared imaging, based more on process than structural changes and requiring neither contact, compression, radiation nor venous access, can provide pertinent and practical complimentary information to both clinical exam and mammography." To learn more see Industry Research.

So DIMI is harmless?
Absolutely. There is NO RISK, NO RADIATION, NO CONTACT. It is safe to say that no other medical procedure is as risk or pain free.

What does DIMI best detect?
The research published in medical journals (www.meditherm.com), suggest DIMI is terrific in clarifying infrared heat emission. Abnormal emission correlates to problems in the sympathetic portion of the autonomic nervous system. These problems often manifest as pain syndromes, or neurological conditions in the torso, arms, legs and, face.

Is DIMI an acceptable tool for detecting cancer?
No. Only biopsy or special lab tests can truly confirm cancer. Although DIMI does not detect cancer, it does point to risk indicators sometimes years earlier than mammography can.

How reliable is this DIMI testing for detecting breast disease?
Published studies on individuals with tumors confirmed that biopsy mammography detected tumors 84% of the time and while DIMI detected tumors 83% of the time. When both were used, the detection rate climbed to 95% (The Breast Journal Vol. 4, Num. 4, 1998 245-251).

Is DIMI an alternative to mammography?
Neither technique is a substitute for the other. However, for seeing angiogenesis markers two to five years before a tumor is detected on mammography, DIMI is the best tool available today.

So why not use mammography and DIMI in conjunction?
That’s exactly what the authors of several research articles are suggesting. Use DIMI for early detection and follow up with mammography and ultrasound.

How often is the test taken and for whom?
This procedure is recommended to all women interested in monitoring breast health. Typically, a baseline scan series is obtained and interpreted. Recommendations may range from “proceed to your physician to seek further investigation” to “return in three months for a second scan to compare to the baseline scan.”

Does insurance cover this?
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage for those injured in automobile accidents pays according to Kentucky law. We do not participate with Humana, United Health Care or Medicare. Some Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans do cover DIMI. We cannot make any promises as to what your policy might pay so we require payment for services when the scan is performed.

Who interprets the images?
Functional Imaging & Assessment of Kentucky (FIAK) has two interpreting sources. Electronic Medical Imaging offers a technical assessment only and charges an additional $55 for their service. Given that most people coming to FIAK want information and insight into lifestyle and options available to them, FIAK enlisted the services of Craig A. Mueller, DC, ACCII. He has completed over 120 hours in post graduate study in infrared imaging and is an excellent teacher via his audiotape report of your scans. This service is included in the scan price. Dr. Mueller is the author of The New Chiropractic: The Human Frame, Diet, Exercise, and the Prevention of Disease, and has also written and lectured extensively on various health topics including countless appearances in court as an expert witness and three years as a guest lecturer at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The U of L medical school has hosted Dr. Mueller as guest lecturer in their new program “Alternative Medicine.”

Is this technology different than that used in the 1970s and ‘80s?
Yes, much different. If you discuss this with your doctor and he/she makes reference to years gone by, realize this process, like most in the medical field, has made remarkable improvements.

What treatment is recommended if something is found?
Functional Imaging of Kentucky provides only the technical component of the DIMI. When your needs will be better served by another healthcare professional, we'll discuss your options, and refer you to the appropriate individual or group. To learn more see Beyond Imaging.
